The floating islands of Lake Titicaca are also a step back in time; houses, boats, and the islands themselves, are crafted of the ubiquitous Totora reed. Modern technology intervenes, though, in the form of a speedy hydrofoil which carries passengers across from the Peruvian shore to Bolivia. Here the traditional costumes of the mountain people are subtly different, but their welcome is sincere.
